Lottie animation
Also called Lottie, Bodymovin animation, or dotLottie
A vector animation saved as a JSON file, usually exported from After Effects, that plays in apps and websites through a Lottie player.
import { useEffect, useRef } from 'react';
import { useReducedMotion } from 'motion/react';
export function SuccessCheck() {
const ref = useRef<HTMLDivElement>(null);
const reduceMotion = useReducedMotion();
useEffect(() => {
let animation: { destroy(): void } | undefined;
let cancelled = false;
// Loaded on demand (npm install lottie-web), so the player stays out of
// the main bundle.
import('lottie-web').then(({ default: lottie }) => {
if (cancelled || !ref.current) return;
const item = lottie.loadAnimation({
container: ref.current,
renderer: 'svg',
loop: false,
autoplay: !reduceMotion,
path: '/animations/success.json'
});
// Reduced motion: skip straight to the finished checkmark.
if (reduceMotion) {
item.addEventListener('DOMLoaded', () =>
item.goToAndStop(item.totalFrames - 1, true)
);
}
animation = item;
});
return () => {
cancelled = true;
animation?.destroy();
};
}, [reduceMotion]);
return (
<div
ref={ref}
role='img'
aria-label='Order confirmed'
className='size-24'
/>
);
}Add a Lottie success animation to the checkout confirmation: load /animations/success.json with lottie-web using the SVG renderer, play it once without looping, and size it at 96px. Lazy-load the library so it does not slow down the page, and jump straight to the last frame when prefers-reduced-motion is set.

What is Lottie animation?
Lottie is a file format and a family of players for vector animations. A designer animates in Adobe After Effects, exports the composition with the Bodymovin plugin, and gets a JSON file that describes every shape, layer, and keyframe. Players such as lottie-web and the Lottie libraries for iOS and Android draw that file at any size without losing sharpness.
The newer .lottie format, called dotLottie, packs one or more animations and their images into a smaller compressed file, played by the dotLottie players from LottieFiles. LottieFiles also hosts a large library of free and paid animations to start from.
Use Lottie for illustrated moments that would be tedious to build in code: onboarding scenes, empty states, success checkmarks, animated icons, and loading characters. Files with many layers get heavy, and the player adds JavaScript, so load it only where the animation appears. Simple motion like a checkmark is often lighter as SVG with CSS. Pause looping animations off screen, and show a still frame for people who prefer reduced motion.

All termsSVG line drawing
An animation that makes an SVG outline look like it is being drawn by hand, by revealing its stroke from start to end.
Micro-interaction
A small moment of feedback around a single action, like a heart that bursts when tapped or a copy icon that turns into a checkmark.
Keyframes
Snapshots that define how an element looks at set points in an animation. The browser fills in the motion between them.
Looping animation
An animation that plays more than once, either a set number of times or forever, set in CSS with animation-iteration-count.
